Black Eyed Peas and the Pressure Cooker!

This morning Louis Dean woke up first so he put the black eyed peas on to cook.
He had soaked them overnight and he figured they would be ready in time for lunch if he pressure cooked them. I was still asleep and when I woke up the peas were smelling good. I could also hear the jiggle thing on top of the pressure cooker jiggling LOUDLY! LD had turned it on high and then went to the den and forgot about it.

At that point I should have got up and gone in there to check on things.
But I stayed in bed just a little longer.
When I heard the explosion I DID get up!!!
The pressure cooker had blown out the gasket and spewed pea pulp over the corner of the kitchen as well as the dining room corner. There was pulp on the rug, on the table, on the coumter, on the tea kettle, the floor, the cupboard doors......pea pulp all over the place!
Louis Dean checkedthe peas in the pot and said they looked okay. We only lost pulp.
I said he could finish cooking them on the stove and he picked up a spoon to taste them and SURPRISE! The peas were done! It took less than half an hour on high! Hope he doesn't do that anymore!!! I said as much and he said he would only use the pressure cooker when I was not home!
He will have to buy another one if he does because I threw that one away!!

I was out of cornmeal and had to make do with this mix.
Louis Dean tasted it and said in utter disgust, "What IS this stuff??"

I sent Summer a text this morning......

She arrived in full Dallas Cowboys mode!!
AND she arrived with chips and salsa from Chili's, drinks from Sonic and soup and salad from The Olive Garden! We had food for the entire day!!

It was a good day spent together in the den watching football and working on our puzzle.
Romo played one drive in the game today and worked the ball right down the field for a touch down!
That was just wonderful and made us feel good to see all the smiles on every one's faces - even though we didn't win the game. We locked into the play offs earlier so a win wasn't necessary.

She made a good deal of progress on the puzzle and I am now totally confident we can finish it this year! I started this puzzle back in 2015!! It will be a miracle if we still have every single piece!

While it was a good New Years Day for us and so many......
there are others who are in a lot of pain and suffering.
Our dearly loved cousin, Pam, took her daughter to the hospital on Thursday and just told us all today. Her daughter, Danna, has been battling cancer for over four years. She is the same age as Amber and gave birth to her son just one day before the quads were born. She remains in the hospital as I write. Deanie spent a few hours with them this afternoon. Our hearts are breaking for them.
We are all praying for courage, peace, strength and comfort for both Pam and Danna and the entire family. We would appreciate it if you could whisper a prayer for them.....

Prayer is the very best gift we can give to them at this time.....

And that is why pressure cookers scare me Linda!!lol So very sorry for your family as you are dealing with such a devastating diagnosis. Will pray for her and for her family.

We were just talking about getting a pressure cooker but they scare me. I saw a new fangled one on tv the other morning and they said it can't explode.

Glad you still had peas left and nobody was hurt. :)

We use a pressure cooker a lot. I've never had one explode but am always aware they can. When I was a child women used to can garden produce using those big heavy pressure cookers and they would sometimes explode and scald a woman. My mother used one and also the regular size we use today. Good to see Summer's smiling face. Where on earth did you keep that puzzle for a year, especially with the quads around? I always thought it would be fun to keep a puzzle going but I never did.

I have never used a pressure cooker and am terrified of them. I have heard of more than one explosion.

So sorry to hear of the news of Danna. Will be praying for her and the family.

Oh the thought of pea pulp all over makes me shudder, followed by a chuckle. Is Louis Dean out of the dog house yet? We all need grace and mercy. Looks as if you all had an excellent first day of the New Year, after things were righted around.

Oh my goodness. Pressure cookers scare me, but I just got the new Insta Pot (have you seen them?) and I love it. They tell me they won't explode.

Now, that Dak Prescott! ;)

I am so sorry; I will pray for her. What a New Years story! This should be told every year, along with much laughing and wine. A family explosion on New Years Day! There is an old saying that whatever you are doing on New Years Day, you will be doing the rest of the year. So I am very glad you threw the cooker away!

P.S. Now you have a good reason to buy one of those modern ones that cannot explode. Many are digital now.

...been there, done that!! Pressure cookers are lethal in my opinion. Never used one since MY explosion. I now use slow cooker for that reason. Black eyed peas are traditional on New Years. But...can't say anything nice about the Cowboys so I'll leave now [kidding...my team for Texas is the Houston Texans.]

great job on tossing the pressure cooker. I could not use one because I forget I am cooking to. you lead such and exciting life. laughing my head off.. but would not be if I had to clean up the mess.
We had blackeyes and I forgot to soak. this is what I did, found it on the peas.
Bring peas to a boil, add hambone, let soak for one hour, bring to a boil then put on simmer and they are done in less than 3 hours.
I soaked from 8 to 9, and simmered to 12 and voila, new years black eyes for lunch

Linda, Yes, yes, I will pray for your family. That is so scary and sad. Your Summer is a sweetheart, I think she takes after you. :):) I think of pressure cooker as bombs just waiting to explode....they scare me. I have never owned one because of stories just like you told us today. Who wants to be cleaning like that....not me girl. I am not telling LD that cooker in the trash. LOL. Blessings to all of you, xoxo, love , Susie
p.s. LD starts the new year with a bang. LOL

Prayers for your cousin and her daughter. Glad Summer was able to spend the day with you-sounds like you had a good time, except for the pea explosion! Our daughter got one of the new electric pressure cookers (Instapot) for Christmas and she loves it. You can set it and go off and do other things and I guess it turns off when it's done!

How many demerits did LD get for this shenanigan? :) I've always been so afraid of pressure cookers! My mother used them for canning eons ago but she scared me so I was afraid to even be in the kitchen when she had it on the stove.

I'm so sorry about Danna...and I will certainly pray for her and Pam. It's heartbreaking to see anyone go through that.

Glad you had a great day! Summer was very kind and generous to come over with all the goodies.

What a wonderfully funny, and I hope not dangerous blackeyed pea story. I have never had a pressure cooker, and after reading your post, don't plan on getting one. HaHa. You and Louis Dean are my daily entertainment. Who needs reality shows. HaHa.

I love blackeyed peas, and my cousin in Fresno grows them, and gives me frozen packages for the freezer. I've never seen that cornbread at Trader Joes....I'll stick to the real thing.

Hugs.

Oh wow. If I was ever tempted to buy a pressure cooker I would mow be just too scared to do it! I have never eaten black eye peas, I wonder if they are called something different here in the UK? X
