Cinnamon Rolls for the Cardiologist!

Louis Dean was a baker for Mrs. Baird's Bakery and then later at Rainbo Bakery. He LOVES to bake!! His cinnamon rolls are out of this world. Since he is a diabetic AND has heart disease.....he doesn't bake as often as he used to. We have a tendency to EAT what he bakes! He worked at Home Depot for a few years after we first married and he would make rolls and share them with all the other employees. Once he made over THREE HUNDRED for a fundraiser! Even though he's retired - AGAIN - they still ask for cinnamon rolls every time he goes in there for some home repair item.

So Monday was baking day! He made FOUR batches which made up about 100 cinnamon rolls! I can't share his recipe because he changes it every time. He says he uses a basic sweet roll dough and then 'tweets' it ....extra sugar in the dough, more yeast, flour.......he works it til it FEELS right!

Since we NEED to give these away....he made a tin for Nita and Mike.
(My sister and her husband - Mother lives with them.)
Mike has a sweet tooth and of course Mother will get her share!

Then he HAD to take a bag full to his cardiologist on his
regularly scheduled follow up visit with him the next morning!!
While in the hospital earlier this year to have a THIRD stint in his heart -
he met with and was blessed by the skills of Dr. Armando Yeppes.
I made cookies to share with all the 'Baylor Angels' which is what we called the nurses at Baylor Medical Center at Irving. Louis Dean even gave some to all his doctors!
Now Dr. Yeppes believes in heart healthy eating....but he does admit to having a sweet tooth - IN MODERATION - of course!!!
So I would imagine my husband is one of the few patients to take cinnamon rolls to his cardiologist!
I am certain he shared the large bag FULL with his staff!

He filled an even LARGER bag and shared with all his former co workers at Home Depot!

The smallest bag went to Brother Ray.......an elderly friend of ours.
We take baked goods and meals in to him sometimes.
Living alone and eating alone can be.....lonely.
He loves to join us for dinner and music jam sessions and plays the guitar a bit himself!

SO!! LD got his 'baking fix', filled a fridge drawer full for a coming visit from Amber and Mike. Once when we were visiting them in Scotland for Christmas Mike requested he make cinnamon rolls. Mike was hungry for anything 'biscuit' related. LD made them and I have to tell you finding the YEAST over there was NOT easy! Amber had some baking ingredients in jars on her counter so he used the 'sugar' container to sprinkle on top of the rolls. Only it was NOT sugar! It was Sweet 'n Low! Only Mike would eat those rolls and he ate every one!

By the time he had done all this baking he was exhausted! He was too tired to clean up afterwards and let me tell you it was a MESS!!

You should have seen the REST of the kitchen!!

As much as I love the smell and taste of the finished product......
it still makes my stomach knot up when I hear him say......

"I am going to BAKE today!"

A man who bakes is something special - my dh makes great fudge & chocolate oatmeal cookies.
Yes, I end up doing the "clean up" too. LOL

Awwww, I'm so glad that LD got to do some baking. And even more happy, that he had all those people to share the "fruits of his work" with.

It's no fun, to get into a baking-mood... And have no one close by, who should eat the finished product. Especially if us (LD and me), we really can't eat it ourselves.

Well, we COULD. But who wants to hurry a stroke, hu? Noooooooooooo wayyyyyyyyyyyy!

Lots of hugs to him and to you too, with this not-so-easy way of living, post-stenting. But, it's got to be worth it. :-)

Gentle hugs,
"Auntie"

The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on."

I think that is so sweet (no pun intended) that you take home baked items to people you like. That is a throw back from time isn't it? People don't do that as much these days and it is a shame. Such a nice thing to do for someone. I love how great the house smells when something cinnamon is baking.

At least he enjoys his baking so much — and it creates wonderful memories for the ones he shares it with!

Oh I understand the knot completely. I'd say that he can bake IF he's willing to clean up with your help. Teamwork can be fun. I bet everyone who enjoyed one of those cinnamon rolls was wearing a grin, including the cardiologist. ☺
