Please Don't Eat the Daisies and a Sock it to Me Cake!

We stayed up late last night watching the Oscars from start to finish! First time in YEARS that I've done that!! I must say it was a pretty entertaining show! Since we were up late that may explain why we slept in til 10:00 this morning! It got down to 14 last night for our low temp and warmed up today to all of 31 degrees!
We left the hot water dripping in the kitchen sink last night but the cold water froze up on us.
How do you keep things from freezing up North?? I can't even IMAGINE!!

It was a nice slow Monday for us!
We had our morning coffee and reading then Louis Dean went off to his music room. He has been working on the song 'Pictures From Life's Other Side' which is a seriously sad song!! He says the sad songs have the best music and he loves them!

We met back in the den for lunch and a movie.......

All 111 minutes of it at one sitting!!
We got a kick out of that play pen!!

Louis Dean was pretty impressed I could sit that long!
(Just between you and me - it wasn't EASY!!)
It was refreshing to see a wholesome movie as opposed to all the grit and grisly ones out now.
Sunday I watched 'My Dog Skip' made in 2000 starring Kevin Bacon that was really good. It was set in the 1940's. Wish they made more movies like that!

This afternoon I baked an old fashioned Sock it to Me Cake!!

I used to make these all the time and they still remind me of Mrs. Swanner at Crestview Baptist Church.
She was FAMOUS for her Sock it to me Cakes!!

I love the way a house smells when you bake.
While it was in the oven I went out to carry the trash to the curb -

LOVED coming in to the warm kitchen and a cake hot from the oven!
Some days Louis Dean and I are so busy - and then there's days like today when we have the luxury of doing what we need to do at a leisurely pace.
It's after 8:00 now so our day is done. Time to pour a glass of wine and sit by the fire for a bit.
But first I must turn that electric blanket on!!

  1. That cake looks yummy. The houses in Canada are insulated around the plumbing plus they try and keep all the plumbing away from the outer walls of the house to prevent it from freezing. You guys have had a very cold winter this year compared to normal. I live by my electric blanket too - great for my fibromyalgia. Cheers!

  3. That cake does look sooo good. We use a mattress warmer instead of an electric blanket. It is good on the ole bones.

  4. Well I have had pipes freeze in the old granite foundation 1840 house, but as long as there's a heated basement, the pipes are usually good. Hope that the pipes were soon fine. I used to find that better than leaving the water running was leaving the cupboard doors open under the kitchen sink so some heat got in there. Gosh it sure got crazy cold down there. Do you call these cold snaps Polar Vortexes or Blue Northers?

Glad that you had a quiet, restful kind of day. I've watched neither of these movies you've mentioned...must add to list.,

    Co-kee-co-la!
    That cake looks amazing!
My goodness! Wasn't it just 80 degrees down there a couple days ago?
Believe it or not, we have never used a electric blanket. Just extra covers and flannel sheets October thru April.
    Keep warm.
    withLove.

  9. We keep the pipes from freezing with insulation and a warm basement. Also, the pipes are never run against an outside wall. Mine are either in the center of the basement or against the wall that connects me with my neighbor's house. There are advantages to living in a row house!

It's been YEARS since I saw Please Don't Eat the Daisies. When I was a teenager I read the book. Several times in fact. It was my sister's book and one of her favorites for a long time.

That cake looks (and sounds) so good. I'm always looking for easy cakes to take to church for fellowship hour. I think this will be my next one. But without the nuts since my pastor is highly allergic to all nuts.

  13. One thing that will help with the pipes is to leave the cabinet doors open for the sink in the kitchen, leaving the faucet on for a drip is always good to. But leaving the cabinet doors open will allow the heat fromt he house to keep the pipes warm. We have a well so we have to place a heat lamp in the well house or we would not have any water all winter along. Hope it warms up for us all real soon. Sherri

  15. Linda, I love that movie"My dog Skip." I am with you about the movies. I love family movies. I hate the computer imaging movies where things are fast paced and jerky. Not even near looking real either. I have never heard of that cake...but it does look good. Glad you had a quiet day with your LD. Blessings, xoxo,Susie
