I woke up on the early side - as in before 8:00 this morning!
I made my coffee and gathered my prayer journal, diary and Streams in the Desert devotional book and snuggled back under the bed covers for my quiet time.
It's a good way to start any day.
And I always open the back door - winter or summer - just a crack so I can look up and see the sky as I read and pray.
I spent the rest of the morning cleaning our bedroom.
I found cobwebs worthy of a Halloween movie!
There is something so very satisfying in cleaning.
Seeing the dust vanish and the surfaces shine.
It was my therapy today......as it is many days.
It's what I do.
Then I lit candles to celebrate a clean room!
I brought this cut glass vase in - thinking it was a vase.
After cutting a big bouquet of rosemary - and the vase never filling up with water - I discovered it was really the base of a lamp Louis Dean had and treasured.
So I plopped my candle inside and it looks so pretty.
I clean everything in the house .....eventually.
Today I cleaned the top of a piece of furniture that held a number of antique books.
Mark Twain books Summer bought for Louis Dean and others.....
but the most important one was the Holy Bible from my childhood.
I learned to read in this Bible and remember loving the pages and seeing the words.
I was two years old when Mother - and I assume it was Mother - bought this Bible.
I know I have been familiar with it all my life.
No writings in it as to whom it was given or any records of births and deaths, although there pages for that. They are blank. But I remember this Bible.
My four year old hands have held it.
My six year old eyes have read these blue pages of illustrated stories.
My nine year old eyes read the new testament to my younger siblings.
I must have carried this Bible to church in my young married life for the only papers I found inside the pages were visitation slips. Names and addresses of visitors to the church I was a member of. I remember Tuesday night visitation.
I'm not entirely sure how I ended up with this Bible but I have had it as long as I can remember.
It is fragile.....and I felt fragile today.
It was a good day to hold the Bible and see the pages my younger eyes have seen.
I claimed the promises I have claimed before as a child.
I accepted Christ as my personal savior - knowing I was a sinner and asking him to save me from my sins - when I was 5 years old.
I have trusted God with my life for my entire life and I continue to trust him today.
God's word is such a comfort to my heart and soul.
The beauty of the truth of God’s word! It penetrates our hearts! Hang on!

I love that you have your old Bible. I can see it is well read. We all needed comfort yesterday. Thanks for sharing this with us. Nothing comforts like God's word.
ReplyDeleteOh that Bible is a precious treasure and how wonderful that you shared it with us! xo
ReplyDeleteLinda, What a sweet treasure. I hope it made you feel better to recall the times you read to your siblings. Yes getting the house clean is a great feeling. Blessings to and LD. Be safe. xoxo, love you, Susie
ReplyDeleteI have a fifties KJV that was a gift from my parents, I will check it to see when they gave it to me. it is old also and has a lot of pictures in it. i carried it from my teens into my late 30's to church. then changed to NKJ. I have 7 Bibles.
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, Growing up (I'm 65 now), we always used the KJV and I memorized much scripture. These scriptures are still precious to me and quoted in the KJV version. I use the NIV now, although I have a KJV and a Living Bible. I have my mother's Life Application Bible. It is NIV, and it has commentary at the bottom of each page on how scholars interpret the scripture above. It's very helpful, especially when reading some of the OT books, and Revelations.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have that Bible for so many years and filled with good memories too. It is good therapy getting our homes clean and shiny. If only the would stay that way !
ReplyDeleteWhat a precious old Bible. All the verses I memorized as a child were in KJV. So comforting in times like these.
ReplyDeleteFantastic memories - hope you feel your normal self soon. Cheers
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Linda, this is a lifetime treasure! Just seeing your photos & reading your narration. Gives me goose flesh!!
ReplyDeleteYour candle idea us terrific.
What a lovely set of Biblical memories. Our precious that fragile Bible that you read as a child. I too accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior as a young girl. Best decision of my life.
ReplyDeleteThe candle looks perfect in the lamp base.
I also LOVE to clean! Love the look when it done, and love to light a candle!!
Hugs,
What a beautiful way to spend the day. Your bible is absolutely a treasure, I remember my Mom lovingly reading her bible which looks just like yours. Precious memories. I also love your decor, you have a knack for making a space welcoming, comfortable, and cozy!
