Sunday and Monday......

Sunday was a nice quiet day. We went to church - continuing the series 'At the Movies.'
Saturday as soon as I pulled out of the driveway, Louis Dean was in the kitchen cooking up a big batch of chicken fried steak fingers and gravy. I try my best to feed him heart healthy meals and he does well with that until he has free reign in the kitchen. Anyway, lunch was easy peasy since we had leftoveres! I just added some vegetables and we had plate lunches with good long naps afterward.

We did some work out in the back yard during the early evening when the sun is behind the fence and it's not as hot. Hard work makes for a good night's sleep - unless you took a 3 hour nap in the late afternoon! I went to bed sleepy but couldn't drift off so I sat up and read for awhile. Tried it again - and still awake. Finally at 2:30 I got up and ate some crackers crumbled in milk.....and was asleep pretty quickly after getting back in bed.

It's funny because Louis Dean and I compared notes - he had gone into the guest room when I turned the light on to read - and he, too, had got up in the wee hours and ate crackers and milk!
It was after I did because I could see the evidence this morning.....cracker crumbs on the counter!

Monday was a WORK day for us.
After our coffee and devotionals, we BOTH geared up and got back out there.

I wore a hat and sunscreen since it was sunny and hot!

This pic was from Sunday.......

as was this one.
That poor elm tree!
The ground cover around it has been pretty much trampled - not to  mention the ditch Louis Dean dug for the French drain that goes down the side of the deck and across the back of the gazebo.

He put up the corner post.....

and I helped him with the two iron bed frames he's using at the back.

There will be another pole between them that will have an electric outlet and light switch on it.
He will add some more dirt behind the deck to cover up the drain along the edge.
The gazebo will be reinforced with parts from all the other gazebos we have had - making it strong and sturdy. Not to mention unique! We are looking to buy new chairs and such but I'm looking for something special. Not sure what yet but I'll know it when I see it. In the meantime - we have the Cracker Barrel rockers and I absolutely can't wait to get it all finished!

We got a lot done today. I worked on the weeds and trimming and cleaning up - keeping an eye on Louis Dean and fetching him the bolts, drill or whatever he need me to hand him.
We would work awhile and then come in the house and cool off under the AC while watching a Closer episode.

This is Louis Dean's all time favorite episode!
"I guess you CAN take it with you!!"
We are still on Season 2. No telling how many times we've watched them.

Louis Dean actually took a little nap after our late lunch but I didn't chance it today so I read the AARP things that came in today's mail. My favorite article was about Jeff Daniels. I really like him. My favorite role of his is Captain Chamberlain in Gettysburg. I tore out the crossword puzzle - and the answers.
Y'all remember the movie 'Catch me if you Can?" Leonardo DiCaprio played Frank Abagnale - the guy who posed as an airline pilot, attorney and doctor. After he was caught, he worked for teh FBI for over 40 years. Turns out he will be speaking to a group in Richardson, Texas (suburb of DFW) on August 15th to discuss how to spot and stop scams. It's free but we need to register and that's what I'm doing as soon as I close tonight's journal entry.

That's it for today!

PS......thank you all for the good suggestions about my Christmas painting.
I have decided to do the horse and Santa and will use it for my Christmas card this year.
Still thinking about the one I'll do for the giveaway and the one for the Family Chinese Christmas Tree. I really appreciate y'all taking the time to comment.
I'm gathering ideas for Christmas ornaments as I have dozens of clear glass balls. I am planning on painting them all up and piling them in a basket to use as party favors for my annual Christmas Tea.
Just in case anyone is wondering.....it's only 53 days to September First!
I actually do realize no one is counting down except me so I'm trying not to rain on all the summer lovers - of which there are many! Still......I do love September!

  1. What a great idea to paint the glass balls as party favors! They will each have a piece of treasured art! Have you seen every episode of The Closer? You have gotten a lot of outdoor work done, and I think your next trip to the ranch will be a welcome rest from this.

  3. Your Louis Dean is a hard worker and he will be done with that in record time. Just be careful, both of you, out in this heat, it's awful! I know y'all are tho....and taking lots of cool breaks etc. I'm glad y'all have found a church you love too!

  4. Oh my gosh, you be quiet girl...53 days till September. LOL You cracked me up with that. Linda, honestly I too have been looking ahead a few months. Teds' hundredth day since his transplant will be August 8th...that's a special marker in bone marrow transplants. Then I think Oct 2019 , is when he will get his baby shots, because people who get bone marrow transplants have to start life over again with those and all vaccinations. Every time I see pictures of LD working, I hear Merle Haggard sing ,"Working Man Blues." Glad you both are taking time to cool off and refresh before working another round. Blessings, love you guys, xoxo, Susie

  5. Good idea to take those breaks from the heat. It's going to be so nice when it's all done. I did yard work yesterday and took 4 breaks before it all got done. My yard is not big either. Aren't we blessed to live in a time when there is air conditioning. Take good care and don't over do.

  6. I think of you and my daughter Rachel, with every sunflower I see. It amazes me every year how quickly time goes by. I'm trying to enjoy each day, though I adore the autumn season! I get excited just thinking about it!

I think you and Louis Dean have a good approach - work, come in to rest, cool down and eat, then work some more. Its good for us to be active and busy.

When you eat your crackers and milk, is it saltine crackers?

  8. I always think of you on September 1st Linda. I can just see your puttering around your house listening to September morn. I loved that Santa and the horse...it was so sweet. I look forward to seeing your painted ornaments. I guess I am in the Christmas mood as I am stitching Christmas ornaments right now. Gotta get ready in advance!!

  11. I didn't know how many days until September but I too won't mind when summer "takes a hike" and doesn't come back for awhile. The only nice thing about summer is that my grandgirls are off school and "off" activities and other such busyness. They are here now, for their 2nd week-long vacation with us.... with hopefully a few more to follow before all is said and done. That's the ONLY shining star of summer for me.

You and LD are working so hard... and it shows. It sounds like you're remembering to rest too, which is a good thing.

    Love you, Andrea

  12. He had a girl in there with him - I love the Closer - we are on the 6th season - and 7 is the last. :(

So tell me does crackers crumbled in milk help you sleep? Regular saltines?

  13. Hahaha. Too funny...you counting down to September! I rather like summer, but of course it is not a Texas summer I'm talking about. I like that quote by Jerry West! So true.
