Look what I found in the mail this morning!
An elegant magazine featuring an article by my own Amber!
She had asked them to send me a copy!
'The Art of Acquistion' was Amber's title. They liked that!
It was all about a lady who finds the most amazing things......at Goodwills!!
I'm sure Amber had a few chuckles as she was writing this!
Now I know I am not in the same league as this amazing woman - but we must be kindred spirits!
I tucked the magazine in my purse to peruse at a later time.
Pam and I went to visit her mom.
Pam had a very serious back surgery recently and can't drive just yet but she IS back in Irving.
We all had a good time together. We stayed through the lunch hour and even took Reaoma outside. Pam needed to walk a bit so I pushed Reaoma and we all got some fresh air! Win! WIN!!!
I got home in time to grab a bite of lunch with Louis Dean and then we were off to get my eyes examined. I have needed to do this for a good while. My last exam was when I was 40 - nearly 30 years ago! Back then I only needed reading glasses. The #125 strength. Now I need that for my driving glasses and a lot higher for my reading ones. No surprise as I knew my vision was off a bit. Far away was now blurry and I had already been driving with mild reading glasses.
I buy them by the half dozen at the Dollar stores.
While my eyes were dilated, I sat in the waiting room and looked at some photos Summer had sent.
OLD photos from long ago! I loved seeing them again.
I vaguely remember giving her boxes of photos a few years ago.
The other day I told Summer to focus on something that could take her mind off her pain.
She found it!
I came home and downloaded all the photos!
Talk about a walk down Memory Lane - this was one!
This photo is of me in the center on my 17th birthday.
Nita is to the left and Lonnie to the right.
I'm thinking Deanie must have taken the picture.
We were at the Piccadilly Cafeteria in Fort Worth.
This was Deanie's 22nd birthday party at my house - the very same house I live in today.
That's Billy - Nita's son - at the right and Summer is behind her aunt. Jesse, Jr is hidden.
This was in 1973 and it makes me smile to see that punch bowl and the colored plastic forks....and the little punch cups!
That wall and curtain you see is where the kitchen French doors are now.
A lot has changed in this house over time.
Lonnie in 1974....He has always been such a handsome guy!
He worked for my ex husband, Jesse, who was a stone mason.
This was about 1970.
My Granny - Myrtle May - and Mother, Summer and Nita.
Mother's Day, May 12th, 1974
My Granny, Mother and I.
June 6th, 1974........
My mother's 48th birthday.
Jesse (ex husband ), Summer, Lonnie and Mother.
I told Summer all these old photos will help me as I write the second part of my book.
Photos trigger memories and I can Google what was happening in the world at that time and that can trigger other memories. It's amazing what we think is long forgotten can be brought back in an instant!
"We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone."
I had no idea Amber was a writer! Hooray! I hope she keeps it up. I know you are a proud mom.
ReplyDeleteSo cool to look at these old pics. As I was fifth of seven kids, I think my mom ran out of mojo (or film), so I don't have many pics of myself! And I don't know where that box is. You were and are lovely. A definite treat, lady!
Jane
I recognized you right away as the pretty 17 year old. I think Amber must have been writing about you! Is it a true story? I am so glad for old photos to fill in my memory blanks!
ReplyDeletelove seeing all these fun older pictures! I did recognize you immediately, and also your Mother. I love looking at old photos, love to see the fashions of the day, I had an outfit just like that one you are wearing--the bell bottoms and the print blouse, did that one tie in a bow in the back?--I had several like that one and the real popular style was the tie in the back. Sure takes me back to another world-the world of bell bottoms, platform shoes, Earth shoes, rainbow toe socks, mood rings, big wide belts, plaid pants and fringy purses! Musk oil perfume, Mannix, Sonny and Cher, and pizza rolls! LOL
ReplyDeleteLinda, I like that quip at the end of your post. I loved seeing all those old photos. I would love to read Amber article. She probably thought of you many times while she was writing it. Please tell her congrats for me. Blessings to all, love you,,xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteOld photos are fascinating. I notice that your mother and her mother are holding hands in one photo. Another thing about old photos of this time frame is that they look so “today” to me. The quality holds up and the fashions and hairstyles do as well. We could plunk your 17-year-old self on Main Street today and you’d fit right in. What a cutie pie you are! Congrats to Amber on what looks like a fun and informative article. Love the title.
ReplyDeletewonderful post of such an in-depth peak into your amazing life,, you are such a gifted writer,,
ReplyDeleteHow very interesting to know your Amber is a published writer. I thought for a moment that you were her inspiration as I know you love to shop the thrift stores. The old pictures with the punch bowl brings happy memories for me as well. I still have mine and get it out for special occasions here. I don't use the cups that go with it though, but put out disposable ones to use. I love that quote about pictures being a return ticket...how true! Hope you have a Terrific Tuesday !
ReplyDeleteSo strange to see you all so young, we forgot we all were once.
ReplyDeletelove the old pictures!
ReplyDeleteAre you inserting pictures into the book? Your family would probably love that :) I need to scan some of our old photos, another project but no time for it right now
ReplyDeleteI love old family photos! What memories!

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the pictures— we saw Lonnie smiling!! You always have loved entertaining and making your home pretty, I can tell.
ReplyDeleteIt’s good traveling through time with you, and remembering what I was doing in the 70’s along with you. All of us have seen much change over those baby boomer years, haven’t we!!
I have thought of my grandma when I saw yours. They were such sweet and tough ladies, weren’t they!! They had to be.
Love that quote you ended with...so true! How special to have Amber's article featured in that beautiful magazine. Smiling at the 'kindred spirit' she wrote about. :)
ReplyDeleteThose old pic's are so fun!
Oh wow I love seeing all these pictures from your younger days. Too cool. You looked younger than any 17.
