It's been a long day but I wanted to journal about Summer's surgery today.
Summer arrived this morning at the hospital.
This was one of those times when she was NOT going to be late!
I joined her and Sabrina as they were waiting after all the preliminaries were done.
Dr. Kosinski is excellent and Summer has complete confidence in him.
They wheeled her back at noon - right on schedule!
Sabrina and I went to the little cafe and had a nice lunch and then began the long hours of waiting.
The husband of a dear friend came by and sat with us for about an hour. That was so nice of him.
We all had a cup of coffee and visited together.
Then a nurse brought a belt that the doctor had ordered, It will help her bones to heal and is to be worn 4 hours a day. It's all charged up and ready to go.
Finally - at 5:50 - the doctor came to tell us she was now in the recovery room and we could go back for 5 minutes.
Don't let the smile on her face fool you.
She was in a lot of pain - so much so that she was in tears shortly after I took this photo.
It took them awhile to get the pain under control.
This is from Sabrina's Facebook post:
Looks like surgery lasted about five hours, Dr. said it was a real mess in there - very wobbly. He put in lots of new bone material with the screws on the rods and she should be a lot more stable. The incision is much larger than they anticipated and she's in a lot of pain. They tell us that she should be out of recovery about 8 o'clock and into her room. Linda and I have nested and her room is ready and waiting on her. She expects to be here until the weekend.

And here she is in her room!
Rayne sent her Chocolate Bear with Mummers to the hospital this morning.
Rayne told her the bear is filled with all kinds of medicine for anything that's wrong with you!
The pain was finally under control and they brought her something to drink and eat.
Summer is one of the kindest and most thoughtful people in the whole wide world.
She brought a huge basket filled with Goodie Bags for the nurses and staff and a big bag full of chocolate bars from Puerto Rico.
She even made goodie bags for Sabrina and me.
Every one's going to love these chocolate bars and her doctor is a chocoholic!!
Summer is receiving excellent care!
Sabrina and I left around 9:30 as Summer was about to go to sleep.
As we went down the hall, we saw her nurse with an armful of medical debris heading towards her room. Hopefully she will be able to get some rest tonight.
I left here at 9:00 this morning and got home at 10:00 tonight.
I'm going straight to bed now myself!!
Thank you all for helping us get through this surgery and this day!
I've been keeping up on Facebook today. So pleased she's doing well. It does appear she was much worse than anyone thought. I'm just thankful surgery was an option.
ReplyDeletePraying for quality rest tonight, pain relief, and healing going forward. Summer has true grit. You do, too.
