A Quiet Sunday

It's been a quiet Sunday down here on the ranch today.
Dean left yesterday to attend a wedding so we have been taking care of the critters.

He has three pens of chickens, two small ones for young chicks that have lights in them for heat, a pen for the peacocks, and then a duck pen and two goat pens.
I fed all of the critters while Louis Dean gave them fresh water.

He had to dump out the ice as the water bowls were all frozen.
In one pen I found a dead rooster. He was inside the caged area so no predator got him.
Also there was no blood on him. Perhaps he froze? He wasn't the smallest bird in the cage.
Maybe he was the oldest.

I went up to the big tank to feed the ducks and try to get them to come in to their pen.
They were already in the duck house yesterday evening so I just closed the gate.
There were ducks and geese on the water today. See the two in the middle of the water?
They are frozen solid!

Right there in the water.
They must have gone to sleep and the tank froze over.

Our entertainment for today was Wagon Train.
We read, ate and napped as well.
It's been a good day!

  2. Oh no, the dead rooster must have been a shock to you. Maybe he was just too old. Your first rooster picture looks so perfect that it looks like a plastic decorative rooster, the kind you see in stores!

  4. Frozen ducks, I would have thought natural instinct would have sent them out of the water. Too bad about the rooster. Dean will have a good idea what happened. When are you heading home?

  5. Glad your Sunday was quiet and laid back. Sorry for the loss of the birds. Didn't realize they'd freeze to death in the water like that.

    Blessings to your upcoming week.

  6. Linda, I have never in my life heard of ducks freezing in the water. Nice that Dean could get away and you guys help him out with the animals. We are all having cold weather...but today it's going to warm up to 32 degrees and rain..that's not so good. Stay warm and safe. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  7. I have heard people say that sometimes chickens just drop dead for what seems no reason. I watched wagon train all the years it was on TV. I love all things western. we just watched Eastwood in Josie Wales night before last.

  8. Linda--put a plastic bottle half filled with water in each water trough. It will float and keep a hole in the top of the water so that it won't freeze solid. Water can escape out of the hole and the livestock can drink. It works.
